Description

Music is a strong way to share feelings and ideas, especially for people who don’t speak with words. Soundabout believes that everyone should be able to enjoy and take part in music.

Soundabout became a charity in 1997. Since then, they’ve helped people with learning disabilities and complex needs make music with their families, friends, and communities across the UK.

They run music sessions and training both online and in person. These sessions help people feel better, connect with others, express themselves, and have fun.

Soundabout always focuses on what each person can do. They let the person lead the way during sessions.

How Soundabout Works

Soundabout helps children and adults with learning disabilities use music and sound to express themselves. Every activity is built around what the person enjoys and how they respond.

They use both sound and silence as part of their music. Their team watches closely to understand how each person communicates - even through small signs like blinking or tiny movements.

They use different tools like acoustic and electronic instruments, and multi-sensory resources. They also use repetition, quiet moments, and time to help people process what’s happening.

Soundabout’s trained team works in small groups. They use improvisation and close interaction to notice even the smallest changes in how someone reacts - like a look or a small gesture.

All of Soundabout's sessions are available on a 'free' to 'pay-what-you-can' basis. They believe that finances should never be a barrier when accessing and experiencing music.

Visit their website to find out more about their online sessions and in-person sessions.
