stem4 - Calm Harm

How to contact this service
Description
Calm Harm is an award-winning app that helps young people manage the urge to self-harm. It was made by Clinical Psychologist Dr. Nihara Krause MBE with help from young people. The app is funded by the teenage mental health charity stem4. It uses ideas from a proven therapy called Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).
The app explains that the urge to self-harm is like a wave. It feels strongest at the start. Calm Harm helps you “ride the wave” by giving activities in five groups:
- Comfort
- Distract
- Express Yourself
- Release
- Random
The app also has a breathing exercise. This helps you stay calm, manage hard feelings, and feel less tense.
Calm Harm gives quick activities and tips to break the cycle of self-harm. It helps you think about what triggers these feelings and build a “safety net” of helpful thoughts, actions, and people. You can also write in a journal and find links to more help.
The app is private, safe, and anonymous. It is not a replacement for professional care. Calm Harm is for young people aged 13 and older.
stem4 is a registered charity (no. 1144506).
