West Northamptonshire has a long and varied history spanning thousands of years and has played a key part in shaping England as we know it today.

Some of the places which form part of our story will open to the public for free during Heritage Open Days, taking place this year between 10 and 19 September.

The heritage buses are back

As in past years, vintage buses will transport visitors between several of the venues, and the bus rides alone are a real treat for young and old alike.

Coronavirus has had an impact on our ability to enjoy events like Heritage Open Days during the past year and more, so it’s wonderful to be able to offer this opportunity again for 2021.

Some of the attractions

You’ll be able to find out about the 1460 Battle of Northampton – part of the Wars of the Roses – and the significance of Hardingstone’s Eleanor Cross.

You can also learn some of the secrets of Delapre Abbey’s Walled Garden, and the abbey itself is offering free entry for a day, alongside a trip down memory lane with some classic cars.

If historic transport floats your boat, consider Abington Park Museum’s Transport Day, or take a relaxing cruise along the Grand Union Canal from Blisworth with Crusader Community Boating.

Daventry Museum is taking part with a range of displays including a focus on ‘Edible England’, this year’s Heritage Open Days theme.

Of course, if art and culture are your thing, we have you covered with opportunities to visit the Charles Rennie Mackintosh house at 78 Derngate, The Old Savoy, or Royal and Derngate.

The fascinating Jeyes of Earls Barton is joining us again this year, and what would the event be without some of our fascinating churches and their hidden details.

It might be worth packing some lunch to take along, not just for you but for William the shire horse who is partial to carrots and apples.

For a full list of events taking place, please see our brochure which will be available in a variety of venues across West Northamptonshire.

You can also take a look at it online.

Alternatively, if you need details in an accessible format, please visit the Heritage Open Days website.

There’s something for everyone, so get out there, explore and enjoy!
