The first West Northamptonshire Area Climate Summit saw members of West Northamptonshire Council (WNC), Northampton Town Council (NTC) and other town and parish councils from across the area discuss the climate challenge and how they can work together to make a difference locally.

The event, which is hoped to be the first of a five-year programme, held on Wednesday, 9 October at Delapré Abbey, was attended by over 50 representatives and focussed on developing and supporting initiatives to tackle climate change.

Organised by WNC and NTC, with support from NCALC and other parish councils and community groups, topics discussed included:

  • Food consumption and waste
  • Biodiversity
  • Communicating climate change

These key topics not only centred around reducing our carbon footprint but also improving the wellbeing of our residents and creating healthier, more vibrant communities.

“It was wonderful to see so many people representing their local communities and coming together to focus on the critical issue of climate change. The summit was an opportunity to find out more about sustainability initiatives, share ideas and network with others. We all have a role to play, from individual households to local authorities and this landmark event highlights our commitment as a Council to building a cleaner, healthier and more resilient future for our residents.”Cllr Rebecca Breese, WNC’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Recycling and Waste
‘It has been mine and one of the town council’s main objectives to collaborate with WNC and parish councils in the area to see what we can do collectively to make a difference in our fight against climate change. We aim to now build on this Summit and organise further events on various topics plus a resources database to support both local councils and residents who want to work together to reduce the worst effects of climate change and build resilience to those extreme weather events that are now probably inevitable’. Cllr Andrew Stevens Chair of Northampton Town Council’s Environment Committee
