Description
The Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire Dyslexia Association (NBDA) is a dyslexia-friendly society that enables all dyslexics to reach their potential.
They aim to support the needs of dyslexic children and young people in education and adults in the workplace. To achieve this, they raise public and professional awareness of dyslexia and campaign for appropriate provision for dyslexics in local schools and colleges and appropriate support in the workplace for adults.
They have been providing services for dyslexics across both counties for 35 years, and are affiliated to the British Dyslexia Association (BDA). They are an independent registered charity and membership organisation. They receive no funding, relying on membership subscriptions and the work of their volunteer trustees who maintain services.
Together with a small team of professional helpline/befriender volunteers (all experts in their field), the NBDA cover all aspects of dyslexia and other co-occurring specific learning difficulties (SpLD). They offer free information, advice, and guidance.
Services include:
- Confidential helpline and befriender service
- Diagnostic assessment services for children and adults
- Directory of local dyslexia specialist tutors/assessors
- Events, meetings, and conferences
- Dyslexia Awareness Training workshops for parents, schools/teachers, employers, and organisations
- Support for parent support groups
- Quarterly newsletter for members
- Parent forum (for members and parents of children with SpLD only)
The NBDA work closely with employers to raise awareness of dyslexia within the world of work - promoting good practice guidelines in becoming a dyslexia-wise employer. They help employers to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ in line with the Equality Act 2010.
