Meet the team behind the demolition of BHS and M&S Northampton
23 July 2025

Work is well underway on the carefully managed deconstruction of 35–45 Abington Street in Northampton, as part of the wider regeneration of the town centre. Specialist contractor Colemans is leading the dismantling of the former M&S, BHS, and Job Centre buildings, marking a significant step forward in transforming this key area.
The project, delivered by West Northamptonshire Council, is a cornerstone of the town’s long-term revitalisation strategy. Once complete, the cleared site will pave the way for new development opportunities that will enhance the town centre’s appeal, support local businesses, and create a more vibrant and welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.
To keep the community informed and involved, Colemans will host a public drop-in event on Thursday 31 July in Market Square. Members of the project team, will be available throughout the morning between 9am and 12pm to answer questions, provide updates, and listen to feedback from the public.
As demolition progresses, safety remains a top priority. Protective hoarding has been installed to safeguard the public while upper floors at the front of the buildings are carefully removed. This hoarding is expected to be reduced in September, with ample space maintained to ensure safe and comfortable pedestrian access on Abington Street.
To minimise disruption, noise, dust and vibration monitors have been installed at sensitive locations across the site, with water suppression and extraction used to control airborne dust. Where practical, non-percussive methods are being used to reduce noise and vibration impacts during deconstruction.
Colemans is also taking proactive steps to protect the surrounding public realm. All paving and surfaces are being carefully preserved and will be restored to their original condition once the works are complete.
The timing of the demolition is aligned with the requirements of the Government’s Towns Fund, which supports the regeneration programme. Undertaking the works during the summer ensures the project remains on schedule and continues to meet the funding conditions essential to delivering long-term benefits for Northampton.
