Description
The Outdoor Learning Alliance (OLA) is a nature-based learning service for children and young people with SEND. It is a therapeutic alternative to school for learners who find classrooms difficult. OLA helps learners feel calmer, build confidence, and get back into learning.
Who it’s for:
OLA supports learners mainly from KS2 to KS5, and may also support 18–25 year olds.
It is often suitable for learners with:
-
Social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs
-
Communication and interaction needs
-
Cognition and learning needs
-
Sensory and/or physical needs
OLA can support learners with an Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP). It can also help pupils who receive SEND Support. Some mainstream learners who need short-term help could also benefit. It may help learners who struggle with attendance, anxiety, behaviour, or routines. It can also support learners who are at risk of exclusion or need help to return to education.
The service:
Learners attend a secure, private outdoor estate. It has:
-
Woodland zones
-
An allotment
-
An outdoor kitchen
-
Woodwork/construction areas
-
Creative spaces
Daily routines are predictable, with a consistent welcome and visual timetables.
Learning is practical and hands-on. It includes horticulture, woodland skills, outdoor cooking, construction, and creative arts. The curriculum supports communication, emotional regulation, sensory integration, and problem solving. Where appropriate, OLA also offers qualifications and targeted literacy/numeracy support.
Personalisation and outcomes:
Each learner receives an individual plan linked to EHCP outcomes (or agreed placement outcomes). Progress is tracked after sessions and reviewed termly. Support is adapted through observation and ongoing discussion.
Safeguarding and transitions:
OLA prioritises safeguarding and wellbeing through robust risk management and individual risk assessments. It also offers a graduated reintegration approach to support transitions back into education.
