Description
The Children's Physiotherapy Service helps babies, children, and young people who have problems with movement, muscles, joints, or physical development.
The service offers assessments, advice, and treatment to help children move more easily and take part in everyday activities.
The service aims to:
- Help children do their best
- Support independence
- Improve movement
- Reduce muscle and joint problems
- Improve quality of life
The team works with parents, carers, schools, and other health professionals. They also help young people move from children's services to adult services when needed.
Who is this service for?
This service is for children and young people aged 0 to 19 years who live in Northamptonshire.
Children with musculoskeletal (muscle, bone, or joint) conditions are usually only seen by this service up to the age of 12 years.
Children with musculoskeletal (muscle, bone, or joint) conditions over the age of 12 are usually seen by the Adult Physiotherapy Service (link) unless they already use the children's service or attend a specialist school.
How can a child be referred?
A referral can be made by a health or education professional, such as:
- GPs
- Health Visitors
- Paediatricians
- Therapists
- Teachers
- Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCOs)
All referrals must be sent through the Referral Management Centre (link).
Information needed for a referral:
The referral should include:
- Details of any pain or difficulties
- How long the problem has been present
- How it affects daily life
- Any injuries
- Relevant test results
- Any support or treatment already tried
The child should be able to take part in a programme of exercises and activities to help improve their movement.
Referrals that are missing information, or are not sent through the RMC, may be returned.
