Description

State-funded schools must give clear, fair, and good careers advice to pupils aged 12 to 18. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Schools’ Advisers can help schools do this.

Schools’ Advisers support young people who may be at risk of becoming not in education, employment or training (NEET). They also help pupils who may find it harder to get a job, such as those with a disability, health condition, or from underrepresented backgrounds.

Schools’ Advisers work with the Careers & Enterprise Company (link) and other groups to add to the careers support already in schools. The help they give depends on each school’s needs, but it can include:

  • Giving pupils, teachers, and sometimes parents simple, up-to-date information about apprenticeships and how to get them.
  • Helping schools set up work experience using Jobcentre Plus’ network of local employers.
  • Linking schools with employers, training providers, and careers organisations, including the National Careers Service (link).
  • Sharing easy-to-understand information about the local job market and what to expect at work.
  • Explaining the skills employers want, like teamwork, communication, and being on time.
  • Running workshops on skills like writing applications, making a CV, and getting ready for interviews, especially for pupils at risk of becoming NEET.
  • Giving careers advice to help pupils understand their choices for education, training, and jobs, including apprenticeships.
  • Supporting pupils with health conditions or disabilities to find ways from school into work.
  • Helping schools run careers fairs by finding employers who can take part.
