An easy read image of a small group of people standing in front of a council building

We are West Northamptonshire Council.

This is an Easy Read Version of our draft Housing Strategy.

What is a Housing Strategy?

Two people stood in the image of a ring with various housing structures around them

A Housing Strategy is our plan.

It explains:

  • What housing problems need to be solved.
  • What we want to improve.
  • How we will support people and communities.
  • What we want to achieve over the next few years.

We want to hear your views about our draft Housing Strategy.

Your views will help us to make our Housing Strategy.

Our Strategy has four themes

Theme 1:  provide more homes for local people

Theme 2:  be a great landlord

Theme 3:  help people live well and supporting strong communities

Theme 4:  improve standards in private rented homes

Why we need a Housing Strategy

An image of a house with a person surrounded by bills and debt images

There are not enough suitable homes.

There are not enough affordable homes.

A lot of homes in our area are very expensive.

Everyone wants to live in a home that is:

  • safe
  • warm
  • right for their needs

People with disabilities might need a different type of home.

Some people need support to help them live in their home.

We need to help match the right type of homes to the people who need them.

What we want to do

1. Provide more homes for local people

Two men discuss housing over a piece of paper

We want to make sure there are more homes that meets everyone’s needs.

  • We will find out what homes local people need.
  • We will build more affordable homes.
  • We will make sure new homes are safe.
  • We will make sure new homes are good quality.
  • We will provide more homes for people who need extra support.

People who need extra support might be:

  • disabled
  • coping with a mental illness
  • someone in a crisis
  • an older person

2. Being a great landlord

A group of people with tools stood outside a house

We want to make council homes better.

We want to make it easier for people who live in our homes.

  • We will make our housing services easier to use.
  • We will keep council homes safe.
  • We will keep council homes well maintained.

  • We will listen to tenants.
  • We will involve tenants in decisions.
  • We will work with other organisations to help tenants.
  • We will provide good housing services and value for money.

3. Helping people live well - supporting communities

Two people stood outside a home offering each other support

We want to make sure that people get support and services when they need help most.

  • We will help people before housing problems become a crisis.
  • We will help more people find and keep a home.
  • We will work together to provide better support.
  • We will help people live independently.

4. Improving standards in private rented homes

A house building with money stacked beside a man stood by a calendar
  • We will help make private rented homes safe and good quality.
  • We will help landlords and tenants understand the rules.
  • We will work with landlords to improve housing.
  • We will make sure shared rented homes are safe.
