Healthy Schools Award

The Healthy Schools Award is all about helping schools build a culture of wellbeing.

The aims of the award are to:

  • improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people across West Northamptonshire
  • ensure that every child gets the best start in life
  • address emerging health needs
  • support schools with early intervention

Award standards

Schools can work towards achieving Bronze, Silver and Gold standards.

Bronze award

Bronze Healthy School symbol

To earn the Bronze award, complete a self-assessment tool with standards in mental health, healthy eating, physical activity, and PSHE.

Assess policy, environment, stakeholder involvement, and community links. Provide evidence where applicable.

Silver award

Silver Healthy School symbol

Building on Bronze, the Silver award encourages schools to conduct a needs analysis to identify health priorities and chosen interventions (universal – whole school and targeted group).

Define measurable outcomes, create an action plan, and outline how the project will be monitored, evaluated, and improved.

Gold award

Gold Healthy School symbol

To achieve Gold, schools will record outcomes and impact from previous work, detail their approach, analyse results, and explain how activities are sustained.

Demonstrate long-term commitment and continuous improvement in health and wellbeing.

What makes our award special? It is designed specifically for schools in West Northamptonshire, so it is relevant, practical, and tailored to your needs.

In December 2024, we awarded the first school in Northamptonshire with the Gold standard for health and wellbeing. As of July 2025, 65 schools have either achieved or are working towards each of the three awards.
