Make Every Contact Count (MECC)
Make Every Contact Count (MECC) is a national approach that supports using everyday conversations to improve health and wellbeing.
Many health issues are preventable. Effective prevention helps people live longer, healthier lives and manage conditions better, maintaining independence and control.
MECC is an approach to behaviour change that uses the millions of day-to-day interactions that people have with others, to support them in making positive changes to their physical and mental health. MECC can be used by anyone who has contact with other people in their day-to-day work.
An MECC interaction takes a matter of minutes. It is not intended to add to existing busy workloads - it is designed to complement existing conversations.
Training and Resources
We have delivered MECC and Health Literacy Awareness training since December 2023.

Health Literacy Awareness Training
Health literacy empowers people to make informed decisions about their health and care. Yet, 43% of adults find standard health information hard to understand.
By using clear, jargon-free language and accessible formats, we can help individuals feel confident, ask questions, and take greater control of their health.
Health Education England and NHS Education for Scotland have developed a 30-minute Health Literacy e-learning module, available via the e-Learning for Healthcare platform.
This short course is designed to help health and care professionals improve how they communicate health information, making it easier for people to understand and use.

Health Literacy 'How to' Guide
Health Education England has also created a practical Health Literacy ‘How to’ Guide, which offers useful tools and techniques for professionals across different settings.
The guide helps you make your information clearer and more accessible, supporting better conversations and improved health outcomes.

Read what some of our trainees had to say about MECC:
"This was one of the best online training sessions that I’ve attended during my 2 years at WNC! MECC is a very useful tool which has helped me learn to 'Keep it Simple' [during interactions]. The presenter made the training so much more impactful because of her care, passion and knowledge for the topic!”
“I think [the training] gives you a light bulb moment - that we are already having these conversations and discussions with the people we support and make contact with every day.”
“The training has helped align my own interpersonal skills with what is required to make every contact count. Much of what we covered can be used in my everyday practice”
