Nearly 90 affordable homes have been secured for local residents after West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) agreed to acquire 87 properties at the Landimore Road development in Hardingstone, Northampton.
The move will see the Council purchase a mix of homes from Tilia Homes, safeguarding 61 properties for social rent and 26 for shared ownership, helping more people access affordable housing in an area where demand continues to grow.
The homes were originally designated as affordable housing through a Section 106 planning agreement. However, without Council intervention, there was a risk the affordable housing provision would not be delivered as intended.
By stepping in, WNC has secured the homes for local residents and protected a vital supply of affordable housing for the future.
The acquisition represents a major investment in housing provision across West Northants and supports the Council's commitment to increasing the availability of high-quality, affordable homes.
All homes will be built to modern design and energy efficiency standards, providing sustainable, affordable housing for individuals, couples and families.
Cllr Charlie Hastie, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities at WNC, said: "This is a significant opportunity to secure more affordable homes for our communities and ensure they remain available to local people who need them most.
“Demand for affordable housing across West Northamptonshire continues to grow, and this acquisition will deliver a mix of social rent and shared ownership homes to support people at different stages of their housing journey.
“By acting now, we are protecting these homes for future residents and delivering on our commitment to increasing the supply of high-quality, affordable housing across the local area."
The Landimore Road scheme forms part of a wider sustainable urban extension to Northampton, helping to create a balanced and thriving community with a strong provision of affordable housing.
The first homes are expected to be completed from winter 2027, with further properties handed over in phases through to 2031.
