Demolition completed at key Northampton town centre regeneration site

The demolition of several prominent buildings in Northampton town centre has been completed, marking a major step forward in plans to revitalise the area.
The former Marks & Spencer, BHS and Job Centre buildings, located adjacent to Abington Street, Wellington Street and Wood Street, have now been safely deconstructed as part of West Northamptonshire Council’s (WNC) wider regeneration programme.
WNC appointed Colemans to carry out the complex works, which began last year and have now finished. The project clears the way for future development, supporting long-term plans to bring new homes, retail and leisure opportunities into the town centre.
The work included asbestos removal, internal soft stripping, full demolition and removal of slabs and foundations. Given the busy town centre location, careful measures were put in place throughout the project to minimise disruption, including continuous monitoring of noise and vibration, and dust control using water suppression.
A strong focus was placed on safety, environmental responsibility and efficiency, with detailed planning and engineering assessments helping to ensure the works were delivered safely while protecting nearby businesses and residents.
Where possible, materials from the demolition have been recycled, supporting wider efforts to reduce waste and promote sustainable construction practices.
Cllr Kamala Guliyeva, Cabinet Member for Local Economy, Culture and Leisure at West Northamptonshire Council, said: "The completion of these demolition works is a significant milestone for Northampton town centre. It represents real progress in transforming this key area and creating new opportunities for residents, businesses and visitors.
“We are committed to bringing forward high-quality development that supports our local economy and helps breathe new life into the town centre, and this work lays the foundations for that next chapter."
Titus Akpan, Assistant Project Manager and spokesperson for Colemans said: "We’re pleased to have successfully completed the deconstruction of these prominent town centre buildings on behalf of West Northamptonshire Council. This was a complex project in a busy environment, and our team worked hard to deliver it safely, efficiently and with minimal disruption.
“Sustainability has been a key focus throughout, with materials carefully managed and recycled wherever possible. We’re proud to have supported this important milestone and to play a role in preparing the site for the future regeneration of Northampton town centre."
