Free summer programme to bring books, magic and music to Semilong

Children and families in Semilong are being invited to take part in a summer of reading, creativity and free family activities as LibraryPlus launches a six-week outreach programme at Semilong Community Centre.
Thanks to additional funding from The Reading Agency, LibraryPlus will be taking library services directly into the community every Wednesday throughout the school holidays, from 29 July to 2 September, between 2pm and 5pm.
The initiative will enable local residents to join the library, borrow, renew and return books, discover free digital and community services, and take part in the Summer Reading Challenge 2026: Read to the Beat.
Delivered by The Reading Agency in partnership with public libraries, the Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 3 to 11 to read six books over the summer. Participants receive a collector's booklet and Storytime magazine when they sign up, reward stickers for each book they read, and a medal and certificate on completion.
Cllr Charlie Hastie, Deputy Leader of WNC and Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, said: "Reading helps children build confidence, develop vital literacy skills and unlock their imagination, which is why initiatives like the Summer Reading Challenge are so important.
“We're delighted to bring this programme to Semilong, giving local families easy access to books, library services and free activities throughout the summer. Working alongside local partners, we're helping more children discover the joy of reading and all that LibraryPlus has to offer."
Alongside library services, a programme of free themed activities and events will take place each week from 3pm to 4pm, inspired by this year's musical Summer Reading Challenge theme.
Activity programme:
Wednesday 29 July - Make Some Noise Semilong
Children can get creative making their own musical instruments, including spinner drums, tambourines, shakers and harmonicas.
Wednesday 5 August - Soundtrack a Story
Participants will decorate their own calico tote bag using fabric paints before learning to play kazoos and creating sound effects to accompany a shared story.
Wednesday 12 August - The Magic with Melody Show
A special interactive magic show featuring musical-themed magical effects, comedy and audience participation, inspired by the Read to the Beat theme. Children will help create the magic and receive a balloon model to take home.
Wednesday 26 August - Silent Beats, Big Moves
A fun-filled silent disco experience delivered by The Silent Disco Project, encouraging children to get moving and enjoy music in a unique way.
Wednesday 2 September - Music, Movement & Mayhem
The final session will feature creative crafts including piano picture frames, magical moving performers and ribbon wands.
In addition to the activities, families will be able to take part in badge-making, access Summer Reading Challenge activity sheets, learn about local support services and discover initiatives such as LibraryPlus' partnership with the Goodwill Foundation, which provides free SIM cards to eligible residents.
