Let’s talk about men’s mental health

06 May 2026

North and West Northamptonshire councils are coming together to encourage conversations about men’s mental health as part of Mental Health Awareness Week, with a free online webinar taking place on Thursday 14 May from 2pm to 3pm.

The session will explore how open, honest conversations can play a crucial role in reducing stigma and helping people access the support they need. The webinar is open to the public and aims to give attendees practical guidance on how to approach conversations around mental health, whether with friends, family members, colleagues, or within the community.

The event will be attended by:

  • Cllr Brian Benneyworth, Executive Member for Health and Leisure at North Northamptonshire Council
  • Cllr Charlie Hastie, Cabinet Member for Housing at West Northamptonshire Council
  • Skip and Julian, who will share personal lived experience of suicide and the importance of speaking openly about mental health challenges. Click here to find out more about Skip and Julian’s journey.

Together, they will discuss the barriers men often face in seeking help, the value of early conversations, and the local support available for those who may be struggling.

Too many men still feel unable to talk openly about their mental health, often until they reach a point of crisis. By encouraging honest conversations and sharing real experiences, we want to help break down stigma and reassure people that support is available and that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.Cllr Charlie Hastie, Cabinet Member for Housing at West Northamptonshire Council
Having a conversation with a friend, relative or trusted work colleague can make all the difference during times of stress, grief or low mood. It's often the one thing that men don't do because they feel that others don't want to listen. My experience has led me to know that we all need to talk to each other more about the things that really matter to us and I welcome this event and many more like it.Cllr Brian Benneyworth, Executive Member for Housing, Heath and Leisure at North Northamptonshire Council

The event will be recorded and will be made available on North and West Northamptonshire Council’s YouTube channels.

The councils encourage residents, partners, community groups, and local organisations to attend and share the invitation widely. By taking part in this conversation, participants can help foster a more understanding and supportive community for men’s mental health across Northamptonshire.
