More active travel options supported by Cabinet

West Northamptonshire Council has approved three new plans to improve how people travel across the area, making it easier to walk, cycle and use public transport.
Cabinet has endorsed the Active Travel Strategy, Rail Action Plan and Mobility Hub Action Plan, which will help deliver the Council’s wider Local Transport Plan through to 2045.
Together, the plans focus on creating safer and better connected routes for walking and cycling, improving rail services and access to stations, and developing new mobility hubs where different types of transport come together in one place.
All three plans have been shaped through engagement with residents, businesses and stakeholders. More than 500 people responded to a public consultation, alongside hundreds of comments on social media, with strong overall support for the proposals.
The feedback has led to a number of changes. These include strengthening accessibility and inclusion in the Active Travel Strategy, adding clearer proposals for rural connections, updating the Council’s position on reopening former rail lines, and improving the design and explanation of mobility hubs.
The plans also place greater emphasis on safety, better links between bus and rail services, and clearer priorities for funding and delivery, reflecting the issues residents told the Council matter most.
Cllr Richard Butler, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “These plans set out a clear and practical approach to improving transport across West Northamptonshire.
“They will support better connections between our communities, encourage more sustainable travel and help create cleaner, healthier places.
“Importantly, they have been shaped by the views of our residents and partners. We’ve listened carefully to the feedback we received and made changes so the plans reflect what matters most to local people and can deliver real benefits both now and in the future.”
