New meningitis vaccine programme to be rolled out

15 July 2026

A new vaccination offer will be available this summer to help protect young people against meningococcal B (MenB) disease before starting university or further education.

The NHS is delivering a one-off vaccination programme across England, offering eligible young people two doses of the MenB vaccine ahead of the autumn term.

Those eligible include:

  • Young people who complete Year 13 in summer 2026 (born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008)
  • Anyone under 25 starting university or moving into residential further education for the first time in autumn 2026

Meningococcal disease is rare but can be life-threatening. It can lead to serious complications, including brain damage, hearing loss and limb amputations. The infection spreads through close contact, such as living in shared accommodation, kissing, or sharing drinks.

Cllr Laura Couse, West Northamptonshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Care and Public Health, said: “Attending University or further education is an exciting time, but it also brings an increased need to be acutely aware of risk of infections like meningitis due to close contact with others.

“This vaccination offer gives young people an important opportunity to protect themselves before they move into new environments with likely close social contact. I would strongly encourage those who are eligible to take up both doses to help keep themselves - and others – safe!”

How to get the vaccine

Everyone who is eligible will be contacted directly by the NHS through the NHS App, text, email or letter.

  • Appointments will be available from 20 July
  • The vaccine is given in two doses, at least four weeks apart, to provide maximum protection
  • Vaccinations will be delivered through participating community pharmacies

Why it matters

Young people starting university or living in shared accommodation are at higher risk due to close and prolonged contact with others.

Young people in the eligible groups will have been offered MenACWY vaccine in year 9 or year 10. This protects against other kinds of meningococcal bacteria but will not protect against MenB, so getting the MenB vaccine is important.

This vaccination provides an important opportunity to protect yourself before the new academic year begins.

What you need to do

If you are eligible, please make sure you book both of your appointments and complete the full course of two doses.

Getting vaccinated now will help protect you and others as you move into new settings this autumn.
