Residents across Northamptonshire now have greater access to sexual health services at a time and place that suits them, thanks to a range of recent developments. These include new clinic locations, extended opening hours and expanded access to free online Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) testing for both young people and adults.

Regular testing is important for protecting your health and preventing the transmission of STIs to others. Sexual health is an important part of our overall physical wellbeing and local sexual health services are available to everyone.

Anyone who is sexually active should test regularly, even if you’re not experiencing symptoms. Regular STI testing is a proactive way to take responsibility for your sexual health and support healthy relationships.

Delivered by Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT) in partnership with North Northamptonshire Council (NNC) and West Northamptonshire Council (WNC), the changes aim to make services more convenient, accessible and responsive to local needs.

Three new clinics have opened in West Northamptonshire at Danetre Hospital in Daventry, Brackley Hospital and Brook Health Centre in Towcester. This has created an additional 32 appointments per month.

In North Northamptonshire, appointment availability has increased at an average of 50% with the increased treatment offer at three existing sites including Stuart Road in Corby, Rectory Road Health Clinic in Rushden and Isebrook Hospital in Wellingborough.

Residents can also order free online STI testing kits for conditions including chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and HIV, offering a discreet and convenient way to test for infections.

Sophie Herbert, Consultant in Sexual Health and HIV at NHFT, said:
“These developments make it easier for people to access free and confidential services and give greater choice in how and when they receive care.”

Cllr Laura Couse, Cabinet Member for Adult Care and Public Health at West Northamptonshire Council, said:

“We want everyone in West Northamptonshire to be able to access high-quality sexual health services easily, confidentially and at a time that works for them. These improvements, including new clinic locations, extended hours and convenient online testing, give people more choice and make it simpler to look after their health and wellbeing.

“We’re pleased to be working in partnership with NHS colleagues to ensure services continue to meet the needs of our communities and support people to maintain their health and wellbeing.”

Cllr Brian Benneyworth, Executive Member for Housing, Health and leisure at North Northamptonshire Council, said:

"At North Northamptonshire Council our Public Health team is committed to working with NHFT to support our public health priorities. These include reducing sexually transmitted infections, providing earlier detection for infections like HIV, reducing unplanned pregnancies and promoting good sexual health, which is important for our overall health and wellbeing.

"Our focus, on behalf of residents, is on making sure the service is welcoming and easy to access. Increasing STI screening is essential in order to reduce infections and improve sexual health so I very much welcome these extended opening times and free testing kits which can be ordered online and posted out to residents. We all have very busy lives and the more accessible this service is, the better for all.”

Sexual health services in Northamptonshire are free, confidential and open to everyone. Services include testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, contraception (including emergency contraception), HIV prevention and care, and vaccinations for eligible groups.

There are also dedicated services for young people, including young person-only clinics, free pregnancy testing, free condoms and home chlamydia screening kits. A postal service is available for testing kits and condoms, and young people aged 13–24 can access confidential text support by messaging 07312263114
