Northampton Choir Shows the Power of Music to Build Community
19 March 2026

The Choir with No Name, a charity that builds empowering choir communities across the UK involving people affected by homelessness and marginalisation, launched a new 12-week project in Northampton earlier this year. The project will culminate in a special celebration performance on 1st April, marking the end of an inspiring journey of music and community.
The project has been made possible through a partnership with West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) and was created to support people with lived experience of homelessness and marginalisation.
With more than 17 years’ experience running choir communities, the charity has established choirs in seven cities across the UK. The organisation is delighted to bring this opportunity to Northampton.
The Choir with No Name approach is simple, but powerful. Weekly rehearsals begin with a cup of tea and the chance to chat, and end with a free hot meal. Together they create a safe, welcoming space where people facing difficult circumstances can sing their hearts out and find support through community.
Being part of a choir offers far more than the opportunity to sing. Since the launch, some choir members have begun to develop routine and structure, strengthened communication and teamwork skills, and experienced the wellbeing benefits of belonging to a supportive community. For many, the project has been an empowering step forward, helping to rebuild self-belief and a renewed sense of purpose.
What began as a small group of individuals coming together for the first time has grown into a supportive ensemble, united by shared achievement and pride in what they have accomplished together.
One choir member shared why they decided to join the project:
“I joined the choir because I know what it’s like to love someone who struggled with addiction and homelessness. Behind every situation is a human being with a story. The choir brings people together with compassion, connection and hope - and that’s something worth supporting.”
Another simply told us: “It utterly lifts me!”
Weekly rehearsals are made possible thanks to the support of dedicated local volunteers, who help set up rehearsal spaces, welcome and support choir members, serve drinks and prepare hot meals.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Choir with No Name. Each rehearsal brings fun, friendship and fantastic food!! All of this is made possible through the joy that music and singing together brings.”Choir with No Name Volunteer
The project will conclude with a celebratory performance on 1st April at the stunning Northampton Museum and Art Gallery. The Northampton choir will also be joined by Choir with No Name Coventry, bringing their own feel-good musical energy to the celebration.
“We are proud to support The Choir with No Name’s Northampton project. This project highlights how making music together can strengthen community ties and improve wellbeing. By providing a safe and inclusive space, this programme helps people with lived experience of homelessness and marginalisation to rebuild confidence, routine and connections.Cllr Charlie Hastie, WNC’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities
“We are grateful to the choir members, volunteers and partners whose commitment has made these 12 weeks so impactful, and we look forward to the celebration performance on 1 April as a fitting recognition of what has been achieved together.”
Local residents are warmly invited to attend and show their support as the choir marks the end of an incredible 12 weeks of dedication and hard work. The performance promises to be a joyful occasion – celebrating not only uplifting music, but also the courage and determination of everyone involved.
Audience members will even have the chance to sing along, marking this a truly heartwarming and spirit lifting event.
Everyone is welcome to come along, celebrate the choir’s achievements, and help make the final performance a memorable occasion for all.
