The new £9.4 million County Mortuary has officially opened at Riverside Business Park in Northampton, bringing post-mortem services together for the first time in a single, purpose-built facility designed around families as well as professionals.

Delivered by West Northamptonshire Council and developed in partnership with University Hospitals of Northamptonshire NHS Group, the Northamptonshire Coroner’s Service, police, and funeral directors, the facility replaces hospital-based arrangements with a modern, coordinated service for the county.

The opening was marked today (Friday 24 April) with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by senior leaders and partners who have helped shape both the building and the way the service will operate.

For the first time, post-mortem services in Northamptonshire will operate from one dedicated location. This removes the pressure on hospital sites and creates a more consistent, joined-up approach between coronial services, healthcare partners, and funeral directors. The new mortuary brings together both invasive and non-invasive post-mortem examinations in one place, supported by modern facilities and digital systems that improve efficiency, communication, and professional standards.

Alongside clinical capability, a key focus of the new facility is improving the experience for bereaved families. The facility has been designed to provide quiet, private spaces where people can spend time with their loved ones, supported by trained staff in an environment that respects the sensitivity of the moment. Dedicated viewing and identification rooms, cultural washing facilities, and quiet spaces have been built into the design from the outset, ensuring privacy, dignity, and appropriate support at a difficult time.

“The opening of the County Mortuary represents an important step forward for the Coroner’s Service.

It provides the environment and facilities needed to carry out investigations effectively, while ensuring respect for the deceased and clear communication with families.”
Mrs Anne Pember the Senior Coroner for Northamptonshire
“This facility has been built to support people at some of the most difficult moments in their lives. What matters is not just the building itself, but how we work together within it.

We now have a space that allows us to provide care with dignity, improve how services connect, and support families in a more consistent and compassionate way.

That has only been possible because of the commitment and collaboration of partners across Northamptonshire.”
Sarah Hall, Director of Governance and Monitoring Officer at West Northamptonshire Council
“This is an important investment in how we support our communities.

It strengthens the way organisations work together, improves the experience for families, and ensures we are better prepared for the future.

This is not just about celebrating a building, but about reaffirming our commitment as an enabling council to compassion, professionalism, and responsibility; especially where trust matters most. It also shows what can be achieved when partners come together with a shared purpose and a clear focus on doing the right thing.”
Councillor Mark Arnull, The Leader of West Northamptonshire Council
“The new county mortuary will make a real difference to the people of Northamptonshire at a time of profound loss. This dedicated setting will allow families to view their loved ones on site, which is not possible at one of our hospital sites. We hope that having this quiet, supportive space will offer some comfort and reassurance to bereaved families when they need it most.”Robin Binks, UHN Director of Nursing

Following final regulatory approvals, the Northamptonshire County Mortuary will become fully operational on 28 April 2026, supporting services across the county and strengthening local resilience for years to come.
