Oxendon Tunnel closed for essential improvements
10 July 2026

Due to essential improvement works Oxendon Tunnel will be closed from 13 July to 21 August.
During this period, the tunnel, a short section of the Brampton Valley Way and the small parking area will be closed to all users to enable vital improvement works to the footpaths and drainage to restore a safe, level surface for pedestrian and cycle use. All other sections and the Kelmarsh Tunnel will remain open.
Temporary repairs have been made to the footpath for a number of years but it has now reached the point where more substantial repairs are required to enable the tunnel to stay open.
The work includes excavation of the existing surface, installation of a new sub-base, and construction of a new durable surface throughout the tunnel to ensure it remains safe and accessible for future use.
Bats are known to occupy Oxendon Tunnel. The dates of the tunnel closure and resurfacing work have been set by the Bat Earned Recognition scheme licence issued by Natural England.
Cllr Nigel Stansfield – Cabinet Member for Environment, Recycling and Waste said: “Oxendon Tunnel forms an integral part of the Brampton Valley Way, which is valued by local people and visitors alike as a popular route for cycling and walking.
“We apologise for the inconvenience these works will cause however, this essential improvement work will preserve the historic tunnel and ensure the route can remain open and continue to be enjoyed for decades to come.”
Clearly signed diversions will be in place from the small parking area at WSW ///risks.starfish.pass to a large brick bridge at W3W ///inflation.market.dubbing. This diversion route is 1.6k long, has sloping ground, steps and four stiles to climb over. It is not suitable for cycles, wheelchairs or pushchairs. Cyclists are advised to decide on the safest route between Market Harborough and the small parking area at W3W ///risks.starfish.pass
