Residents encouraged to check voter registration details as annual canvass begins

West Northamptonshire Council is encouraging residents to check and respond to their annual canvass email or letter to help ensure they remain registered to vote and that household information is kept up to date.
The annual canvass is carried out each year to maintain an accurate and complete electoral register. Taking a few minutes to respond helps make sure everyone who is eligible can vote in future elections. It can also support other aspects of everyday life, including identity checks and eligibility for jury service.
Every household will receive a message, either by email or post, asking a resident to confirm who lives at the address and is eligible to vote. Those who have previously shared an email address with the Council should look out for an official email from [email protected] . Please note that, on some devices or email providers, the sender may appear simply as Elections.wnc.
Communications will be clearly identifiable as coming from West Northamptonshire Council and will include a secure code enabling residents to check and confirm their details online. Residents receiving a paper form will also be able to respond online using the security details provided.
If someone in a household needs to be added to the form, they will also need to register to vote. Registration forms will be issued where required, but residents can also register quickly and securely online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
This year, some households will see a message on their canvass form if a postal vote linked to the address is due to expire, giving voters plenty of time to reapply if they wish to continue voting by post.
Martin Henry, Chief Executive and Electoral Registration Officer for West Northamptonshire Council, said:
“The annual canvass helps us keep West Northamptonshire’s electoral register accurate, ensuring residents are correctly registered and able to vote in future elections. If you receive an email or letter from us, please check your details and respond if required. It’s a quick and simple process that only takes a few moments.”
Reminder letters will be issued to households that do not respond, and some properties may receive a visit from a member of the Electoral Services team where a response is still required. Council officers carrying out visits will always carry identification.
The council reminds residents that it will never ask for personal or banking information in its canvass communications. Anyone unsure about a message they’ve received is encouraged to call 0300 126 7000 to check.
Residents who have recently moved, or who are not currently registered to vote, can register easily and securely online at www.gov.uk/registertovote.
