Work begins on new sustainable bus shelters across West Northamptonshire

West Northamptonshire Council has begun installing a new generation of modern, environmentally friendly bus shelters across the area, as well as refurbishing existing shelters.
The project is being delivered in partnership with Bauer Media Outdoor UK, one of the UK’s largest Out of Home media and infrastructure companies, which will install, manage and maintain all the council’s shelters as part of a wider improvement programme.
In total, the scheme will see 100 new shelters installed and a further 125 shelters refurbished as part of the initial works programme under the media owner’s Revive scheme.
All new shelters will feature:
- Accessible seating and improved space for wheelchairs and prams
- Motion‑sensor courtesy lighting
- Ultra‑low power smart lighting systems that reduce overnight energy consumption by 84 per cent
- Digital screens at selected sites, powered by 100 per cent renewable energy*
Work has begun with the refurbishment of 125 shelters, starting on St Leonard’s Road and Hunsbarrow Road.
The move will significantly cut carbon impact by extending their life for up to 10 years while reducing disruption to the public. Twenty of the new shelters will also feature Living Roofs, supporting local biodiversity.

All new shelters are built using 99 per cent recyclable materials, with a high proportion of recycled aluminium used in their manufacture. Shelters have been built off‑site to allow quicker installation and minimise disruption.
Bauer Media Outdoor will also take responsibility for ongoing maintenance using hybrid vans and a sustainable cleaning system that uses rainwater harvested at its depot, reducing water use by half compared to traditional methods.
Alongside improved passenger facilities, the upgraded digital screens will reduce the need for paper posters and associated maintenance visits. They will also provide the council with space to share public information and will run free campaigns for local charities.
