SEND support in early years

Reviewing your child's progress

Children are usually offered a health and development review between the ages of 2 and 3. These reviews help parents, carers and professionals understand how a child is developing and identify any additional support they may need.

2-year progress check

Early years providers must review a child's progress when they are aged between 2 and 3 years.

The review focuses on:

  • communication and language
  • physical development
  • personal, social and emotional development

Parents and carers will receive a summary of their child's progress, including their strengths and any areas where additional support may be needed.

Health and development review

Children are also usually offered a review through the Healthy Child Programme by a health visitor.

The review looks at:

  • speech, language and communication
  • learning and development
  • physical health and growth
  • behaviour and social development
  • hearing and vision

The review helps identify any concerns early and ensures families can access the right support if needed.
