Brackley Active Travel Scheme 1: Manor Road/Waynflete Avenue
Manor Road is a busy route within Brackley, running adjacent to the High Street and home to four schools, two nurseries, as well as homes and businesses.
The road experiences high levels of road traffic, particularly during peak times such as school drop-offs and pick-ups. The road itself is very limited in space, with narrow footways and a high demand for parking, making it feel less safe for pedestrians and less appealing for walking and cycling.
In Summer 2025, we consulted on 3 potential improvement packages for Manor Road and Waynflete Avenue. A detailed feasibility report was developed:
Using feedback from residents, schools and local stakeholders, a preferred package of measures has now been developed which include:
Road safety and accessibility
- Adding raised platforms to existing and introducing new raised zebra crossings:
- to the east of the Waynflete Avenue / Beaumont Crescent junction
- Manor Road outside Magdalen College
- Manor Road outside The Winchester School
- Manor Road outside number 53
- Manor Road outside number 94
- Widening footpaths
- Improving junction surfaces to enhance safety and accessibility
Parking Improvements
- Providing marked out on street parking bays
- Timed parking bays on Waynflete Avenue to facilitate coach parking during school drop off and pick up times (spaces would be available to everyone outside of these hours)
- General review of parking arrangements
Traffic Circulation
- Changes to make Manor Road one-way northbound between Waynflete Avenue and Halse Road
- Changes to make Waynflete Avenue one-way westbound between Manor Road and Beaumont Crescent
Full concept design drawings
This drawing shows the preferred option for traffic management and pedestrian improvements along Manor Road in Brackley, including the areas around Waynflete Avenue, Beaumont Crescent, Charterhouse Close and Waitrose.
The proposals include introducing:
- one-way traffic sections
- new priority arrangements where vehicles give way to oncoming traffic
- footway widening
- raised junctions to reduce vehicle speeds
- changes to parking arrangements
- additional waiting restrictions
- the removal of some guard railing
The scheme is intended to improve road safety, traffic flow and conditions for pedestrians, particularly near local schools and community facilities.

The proposals include:
- wider footways
- raised zebra crossings
- one-way traffic arrangements
- side road treatments that give greater priority to pedestrians
- resurfacing works
- low-level planting and seating
- measures to prevent footway parking
The scheme also includes improvements outside local schools to support safer walking routes and reduce vehicle speeds. These changes are intended to improve road safety, accessibility and the overall pedestrian environment.
