Brackley Active Travel Scheme 2: High Street/Northampton Road
The High Street/Northampton Road corridor was identified as a key route because it connects residential areas, schools, local facilities and the town centre, including the growing communities around Radstone Fields.
We have developed a range of potential improvements to help create a safer and more attractive active travel route between the BP roundabout and the junction of High Street and Halse Road.
The draft proposals also include measures to help reduce traffic speeds to improve road safety. These proposals are at an early stage. We would appreciate your feedback to help shape a preferred option which would be subject to further consultation.
High Street/Northampton Road
The High Street and Northampton Road corridor forms an important route connecting residential areas, schools, local facilities and the town centre. The proposed improvements aim to create a safer, more attractive and accessible route for people walking, wheeling and cycling.
One idea is to create a largely continuous walking and cycling route along Northampton Road between the A43 junction with Northampton Road and Halse Road. To achieve this, existing footways would be widened to create shared-use routes, generally around 3m wide, providing more space for pedestrians and cyclists.
Junction improvements
A number of junction improvements are proposed to improve safety and accessibility including:
- continuous footways across side roads, giving greater priority to people walking and cycling
- new and upgraded crossings including parallel and toucan crossings
High Street and Burwell Hill improvements
Additional improvements are proposed between High Street and Burwell Hill, including wider footways and upgraded crossing facilities.
Two options are currently being considered to help reduce vehicle speeds and improve road safety:
- Option 1: Priority Working - Southbound vehicles travelling towards the town centre would give way to oncoming traffic through a narrowed section of road
- Option 2: Speed Cushions - Speed cushions would be introduced to encourage lower vehicle speeds while maintaining the existing traffic arrangement
We would like your feedback on these options to help identify a preferred solution.
Concept design drawings
This drawing shows proposed walking and cycling improvements along Northampton Road in Brackley, particularly around the High Street, Halse Road and Church Road junctions.
The proposals include:
- a new contraflow cycle lane
- wider footways for pedestrians
- an upgraded crossing for pedestrians and cyclists
- a continuous crossing across Halse Road
- junction changes designed to reduce vehicle turning speeds and improve safety for people walking, wheeling and cycling
The plan also highlights areas of new footway construction and shared-use paths.
This drawing shows proposed walking, wheeling and cycling improvements along Burwell Hill and High Street in Brackley.
The proposals include:
- widening footways
- creating shared walking and cycling routes
- constructing a new footway section
- providing dropped kerbs for cycle access
- introducing new pedestrian crossings
The design also removes existing traffic islands and includes two options for traffic calming: a priority system where southbound vehicles give way to oncoming traffic, or the installation of speed cushions to reduce vehicle speeds.
These changes are intended to improve safety, accessibility and connectivity for people walking, wheeling and cycling.

The proposals include:
- wider shared-use paths
- new pedestrian and cycle crossings
- a new signalised junction
- continuous crossings across side roads
- new links connecting existing walking and cycling routes
The scheme also includes the relocation of a bus stop, the removal of some existing crossing facilities, and changes to the road layout to provide more space for pedestrians and cyclists.
These improvements are intended to make journeys safer, more accessible and better connected.

The proposals include:
- widening footways to create shared walking and cycling routes
- upgrading an existing crossing to a wider pedestrian / cycle crossing
- providing a new raised parallel crossing
- improving access to shared-use paths with dropped kerbs
- introducing continuous crossings across side roads
The scheme also includes measures to improve accessibility by reducing level differences between the footway and carriageway and removing some existing uncontrolled crossing points.
These improvements are intended to create safer, more accessible and better-connected routes for people walking, wheeling and cycling.
