A programme of essential refurbishment works will begin at Northampton Central Library next week, helping to update and future-proof this valued community space.

The works will be delivered in phases over the next 12 months, allowing the library and Registration Service to remain open while the improvements are carried out. The programme represents a significant investment in the Grade II listed building, designed to protect its longevity while modernising facilities and improving accessibility for residents, customers and staff as well as bringing vital services together to be delivered in the one location as a Multi-Hub.

The first phase, starting on 29 June and running across the summer, will focus on essential roof repairs and the refurbishment of the Carnegie Room on the first floor. This addresses ongoing issues with leaks and ensures the building remains safe and operational.

Across the full programme, upgrades will include:

  • Improved accessibility, including the installation of a new evacuation lift
  • Refurbished and more inclusive public spaces, with new flooring and redecoration where needed
  • Refurbishment of the historic Carnegie room and roof repairs
  • Upgraded and additional public toilet facilities
  • Additional Registrar office
  • A redesigned children’s library area
  • A new Family hub with therapy and sensory rooms

A key part of the project is the creation of a new Family Hub within the library. This will provide a welcoming, central location for families with young children, featuring dedicated therapy rooms and a sensory space for children aged 0-5.

By bringing Family Hub services into the library, families will be able to access support more easily in a familiar setting. Co-locating services will enable a more joined-up approach, improving early intervention and making it simpler to combine support with opportunities for reading, learning and play.

While some temporary disruption is expected, the library and Registration Service will remain open throughout the works. Clear signage will guide customers during any access changes, and support will be available while the lift is out of service for approximately six to eight weeks at the final stage of the project before expected completion in Spring 2027.

Cllr Kamala Guliyeva, Cabinet Member for Local Economy, Culture and Leisure, said: “This is a much-needed refurbishment of one of Northampton’s most important and well-loved public buildings. These essential works will help protect the future of the library, ensuring it remains a safe, accessible and welcoming space for our communities.

“At the same time, the improvements we are making, including the introduction of a Family Hub, will enhance the support available to residents and make it easier to access services in one central location.

“The project reflects the Council’s continued commitment to maintaining vital community buildings while strengthening local services and improving outcomes for children and families. Residents are encouraged to continue using the library as usual and to look out for updates as the project progresses.”
