Setting up a bank account

Opening a bank account is very important when you are recognised as a refugee. This will help you keep your money safe and enable you to receive payments from employers or social security benefits. Because of this, you should set up an account as soon as possible.  

There are various banks that you can register with. You will be able to choose one that suits your needs best. An account with a digital bank is easiest to set up. This includes:  

To open a bank account, you will need to complete an application form either in the bank, in person or online. They will ask for several documents as proof of identity that include your full name, date of birth and address. This is usually a passport, driving license or utility bill.  

Different forms of identification will be accepted if you do not own one of these. This may differ depending on the bank.  

You will receive an account number, a sort code and a bank card that you can use in shops, online, and at ATMs.
