Skills Bootcamps - Construction, Green Skills and the Built Environment

Available Skills Bootcamps

This Skills Bootcamp will give you an overview on the key aspects of working in this sector and, upon successful completion, you will be guaranteed an interview with an employer in the sector.

To qualify, you will need to have a reasonable level of English and Maths. You will also need to be able to travel independently to the campus in Moulton, Northamptonshire.

Duration

The course will take three weeks to complete.

Start date

This course is scheduled to start in October 2026.

Where you will study

This course will be taught through a mix of online and on-campus learning at Moulton campus, near Northampton.

What you will learn

  • Safety & Site Access - Health and Safety training required to earn a Green CSCS Card
  • Civil Engineering Fundamentals - Drainage, stormwater management, concrete placement, and buried services detection
  • Workplace Skills - Environmental awareness, mental health awareness, and carbon impact management

Assessment

In order to complete the programme, you will be assessed on your understanding of key principles and observed completing a number of practical tasks.

3R Fabric First (retrofit, repair, and refurbish) Bootcamp

This qualification is the ideal place to start your retrofit journey. The course will give you a good understanding of what domestic retrofit involves, along with the trade skills to carry out the work that is required.

The qualification is applicable to a wide range of people, including those already working in the sector, those considering joining it and those who are impacted by it.

Duration

This is an 6-week course, full-time from 8:30am to 4:30pm.

Groundwork Bootcamp

Duration

This is an 6-week course, full-time from 8:30am to 4:30pm.

What will the course cover?

Health and Safety in a Construction Environment
Workplace health, safety and welfare in ground works operations
Operate a powered tool and equipment in ground works operations
Utility location and avoidance in ground works operations
Prepare for and carry out ground works operations
Installing drainage in ground works operations
Laying kerbs and channels in ground works operations
Laying modular paving in ground works operations
Lay and finish concrete in ground works operations
Working in confined spaces in ground works operations
Providing shoring support in ground works operations
Installing shallow pipelines in ground works operations
Conform to productive work practices in ground works operations

Learners can choose from four specialist Bootcamps:

  1. CAD for Construction
  2. Estimating Skills
  3. Business Management Skills
  4. Project and Job Management

Each Bootcamp equips them with practical capabilities, such as:

  • interpreting construction drawings
  • using industry software including PlansXpress and EstimatorXpress
  • producing cost estimates
  • managing projects and budgets
  • understanding legal and safety requirements
  • communicating effectively with clients and teams

The Bootcamps also support wider skills in sustainability, inclusion, and ethical practice, alongside recognised qualifications such as SSSTS and PRINCE2® Foundation.

Duration

76 guided learning hours delivered in 2-hour slots twice a week.

Location

This course is delivered online with all necessary software provided.

This course is aimed at those who have completed and passed CISRS Part 1 and spent a minimum of 6 months on-site since. The course involves working as a team to safely erect, alter and dismantle scaffolding structures and includes your NVQ Level 2.

This is a face-to-face course delivered by Northampton College.

How is the course assessed?

Assessment is mainly practical and based on your ability to demonstrate the skills you develop. Your work will be captured in a portfolio of evidence, which you can use to showcase your progress to employers.
