E-scooters offer sustainable, affordable, and flexible point-to-point travel for short journeys, helping to reduce environmental impact and improve air quality.
Regulations for e-scooters
Users may ride trial e-scooters on roads and cycle lanes within the designated trial zones. Riding on pavements is prohibited, with penalties including fines up to £300 and/or 6 penalty points on a driving licence.
Riders must be at least 18 years old and hold a provisional or full driving licence.

Availability and usage
Approximately 3,000 Voi e-scooters are deployed across Northamptonshire, available from 4am to 11pm daily. E-scooters are not permitted on trains and buses, and must not be kept at private residences.
Legal Status of Private E-Scooters
Private e-scooters are illegal on public roads in Northamptonshire unless used on private land with the landowner's permission.

Safety
New riders can earn credits by completing modules of Voi’s Ride Like Voila traffic school. Over 16,000 sessions have been completed to date.
Riders should:
- follow the Highway Code
- avoid riding on pavements
- abide by speed limits
- stay vigilant of their surroundings
- ensure only one rider per e-scooter
Wearing a helmet is recommended.
Voi investigates reports of rule violations and takes necessary actions, including banning users if required.
You can ride Voi e-scooters in the dark. They have front and rear lights, and a bell to help you see and be seen.
Voi and councils design parking areas for e-scooters. They rebalance the fleet daily and adjust geofencing in problem areas.
Voi e-scooters in Northamptonshire travel at a maximum speed of 12.4 mph. In slow zones, they go 5 mph. Beginners can use the app to limit speed to 10 mph. Private e-scooters are illegal unless on private land.
Riding e-scooters on pavements is illegal. Report incidents to Voi. They issue warnings and bans for pavement riding.
You can not end a ride in a no-park zone. If you do, you will receive a fine and Voi will move the e-scooter.

Sustainability
Voi’s e-scooters are zero-emissions vehicles with a lifespan of 5+ years.
Voi uses swappable batteries to reduce service trips and pledges to recycle scooter parts and materials. The company has been operating carbon-neutral since January 2020.
Reporting issues
If you encounter any issues with e-scooter use, you can report them using Voi's dedicated online form.
When you report misplaced scooters or misuse, include the time, location, and e-scooter ID.
