Charging your electric vehicle at home or near home
Charging at home
For residents with driveways, it is simple to charge your electric car at home. Just plug it in overnight and it is ready to go in the morning, this way is often cheaper than using public chargers.
Residents with off-street parking
Follow these steps to install a home charger:
- Check if you are eligible
- Choose your charger
- Assess your electrical capacity - use a qualified installer
- Hire an OZEV-approved installer - this ensures safety and grant eligibility
- Book your installation day and start charging
Users can find approved installers on GOV.UK by visiting the find an electric vehicle (EV) charge point installer page.
To read the full guide of information on how to charge your vehicle at home, see EV Charger Installation Requirements.
Residents without off-street parking and LEVI funding
The government is helping councils install on-street chargers through the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund. These chargers make it easier for people without driveways or garages to charge their electric vehicles near home.
Other ways to charge
If you are not able to install a home chargepoint, there are services available that allow residents to share or rent EV chargers within their community. These schemes can offer practical solutions in areas where off-street parking is limited.
Examples of available services include:
- Zap-Home - Allows EV owners to offer their chargers for others to use
- Co Charger - Connects drivers with nearby private chargers
- Place2Park - Offers EV charging access through community-based parking spaces
Existing charge points can be found on Zap Map.
