Personal Education Plan: Post 16

An initial PEP should be carried out within 20 days of a young person entering care. The post 16 PEP aims to support young people who are in education, training, or employment, or if they are not engaged (NEET) to support them to become so. 

Types of post 16 PEP

The general post 16 PEP is held twice in an academic year.

The first phase starts after the October half term until the February half term. The second phase starts from the end of February half term until the end of June. 

The progression review PEP is held once a year in the last week of July and the first week of August. This is conducted by the Virtual School Team and the social care Team Manager. 

Uses of a post 16 PEP

It is designed to be used when a:

  • young person is in education or training 
  • young person is apprenticed or employed 
  • young person is not engaged in education, training, or employment (NEET)
  • young person is in criminal custody

The PEP process

  1. The social worker organises a PEP meeting with the designated teacher or person at the education setting 
  2. They will complete their relevant sections of the PEP and agree who will gather the young person's view to add to the PEP
  3. During the PEP meeting the social worker and designated teacher will agree their roles and ensure the PEP is recorded. They will have 5 working days to complete it

  1. The social worker arranges a PEP meeting and completes the relevant sections of the PEP
  2. They will gather the young person's view and add it to the PEP
  3. At the PEP meeting they will ensure the PEP is recorded and after will have 5 working days to complete it

  1. The social worker obtains evidence of employment from the young person and their views
  2. The social worker attaches information to the PEP and completes the relevant sections of the PEP
  3. A date is arranged for the next PEP by the social worker and they mark it as complete

  1. The social worker obtains the education or training plan for the young person from the custodial setting
  2. The social worker completes the relevant sections of the PEP, attaches the plan and adds the young person's views 
  3. A date is arranged for the next PEP by the social worker and they mark it as complete
