Castle Park Heritage Part 16: Transformation of the park

In 2025, the former car park at Chalk Lane underwent a remarkable transformation into the vibrant, green space we know today as Castle Park. Located on part of the historic site of Northampton Castle, this park now serves as a much-needed hub for the local community.

During the planning stages, archaeological surveys revealed significant historical finds beneath the surface, likely remains of Northampton Castle and its surrounding castle walls. These discoveries help us understand the area's medieval past when the castle played a central role in the town's development and history.

The creation of the park was driven by the local community's desire for a safe, welcoming environment where people of all ages could gather, relax, and enjoy nature. Today, Castle Park features green lawns, a community garden, a castle themed children's play area, and open spaces for all to enjoy.

You can view a drawing of the park's layout in the document below.

It also preserves the historical essence of the site, with the heritage timeline poles illustrating the former height of Northampton Castle and telling the story of the area's rich past.

Castle Park now offers a peaceful space where the community can connect with nature, celebrate local heritage, and create new memories in a space that blends history with modern-day vitality.

Special thanks to the Spring Boroughs Community, local historians and archaeologists, Friends of Northampton Castle, Spring Lane Primary School and Friends of Castle Park for their hard work in supporting the creation of a new park on this historically significant site.
