Type of chargers to be installed
The network will include a mix of charger types. Most will be standard chargers (7–22kW), with the majority installed as lamp column chargers using existing street furniture.
This approach helps manage local electricity demand and supports a reliable, affordable and well‑maintained charging network across the area.
Cost to charge
Charging prices will stay competitive and reflect current electricity market rates.
Using renewable energy
Where the Council can supply renewable energy from sites it owns, such as solar panels at car parks or other locations - the operator must use this energy first. The operator will pay the Council the same rate it would pay for standard supply.
West Northamptonshire’s EV Strategy prioritises lowering carbon emissions and encourages renewable‑powered charging where it is commercially feasible.
Delivery timeline
Once a chargepoint operator is appointed through a competitive procurement process, installation is expected to start in late summer. This timeline depends on completing the required PFI approval process.
