Homes for Ukraine - health, wellbeing and Covid
GP and dental services
All visitors and guests are entitled to access NHS services free of charge. You are strongly encouraged to help them register with a GP and dental practice as soon as possible.
Health systems in Ukraine will differ from ours in the UK. The NHS website has a health guide for migrant patients and an animated video.
Please observe the guidance the NHS provides in relation to primary and secondary care services. Calling 111 for advice about medical symptoms and conditions is often preferable than just going to A&E. The 111 service has interpreters available too.
If you have any wellbeing or safeguarding concerns about your guests and their families you should contact us:
Reporting war crimes
The Met Police website has information in English, Ukrainian and Russian about reporting war crimes.
Ukrainian guests and family members will be able to access all NHS services and that includes Covid vaccinations. You’re strongly advised to help them register with a GP and dental practice as soon as possible.
A full course of vaccinations, including the 3rd booster dose for anyone aged 16 and over is available to them free of charge.
This will also include any further doses if individuals are immunocompromised.
The normal Covid guidance issued by the Government applies to both sponsors and guests.
Free lateral flow tests
Lateral flow tests are only available free of charge to the over-75s and over-12s with weakened immune systems. Everyone else will be required to purchase them. That applies to Ukrainian guests and their families staying with you.
There is a charging exemption for NHS treatment for anyone ordinarily resident in Ukraine, but lawfully in the UK.
Many migrants will come from countries with very different health care systems to the UK. The guide below can help to:
- explain to new patients how the NHS operates
- explore how this compares to the healthcare system that they’ve been used to
The guidance is about NHS entitlements in England.
