Research support in the Archives

Research service

In most circumstances, Archives staff will be unable to carry out research for you. However, if you're unable to attend in person you can pay for our research service.

Our highly effective researcher can look into specific documents or questions on your behalf. Charged by the hour, you will receive a detailed report, including details of all the documents consulted. This service is a cost-effective alternative to travelling long distances to visit us in person.

If you need a little help while you are here, then a consultation meeting with our researcher could be just what you need to open up new areas of research.

Transcription

Sometimes, even with a high-resolution digital image, old documents can be hard to read, due to changes in spelling and handwriting style over the centuries. Our experts can create a transcription and save you a great deal of time and effort.

Translation

Our Researcher can also create translations or summaries of documents written in Latin. They can also provide full word for word transcripts or calendars (key points) of documents you might find hard to read because of the handwriting.

Historic Environment Record searches

If you are interested in a particular location, then you might want to consider a report showing historic buildings and landscapes as well as archaeological finds. For more information please visit the Historic Environment Record or the Portable Antiquities Scheme.

To find out more about any of the services listed above, contact the Archives Service.

Digital images

Our high-resolution images mean that you can see amazing detail in any document or photograph. They are the next best thing to studying the original and can transform your research from home.

We aim to process all orders within 10 working days.
