Play spaces in West Northamptonshire

West Northamptonshire Council manages 116 play spaces. These include play areas, outdoor gyms and multi use games areas (MUGAs). Parish and town councils also provide additional sites.

Play is important for children’s development. It helps build social skills, confidence and resilience, and supports learning for school and later life.

Our play spaces offer a range of equipment for active and imaginative play for local families and visitors.

Types of play spaces

Larger play spaces

Larger sites, such as Daventry Country Park, have bigger play areas with a wide range of equipment.

They are designed for different ages and abilities.

Smaller community play spaces

These are in local neighbourhoods and housing areas. They provide simple equipment for children up to age 12.

Multi use games areas (MUGAs)

MUGAs are fenced courts for activities like football and basketball, they are suitable for all ages.

Accessible play

Many play spaces are designed to be accessible for children with disabilities.

Features may include:

  • level surfaces for wheelchair access
  • specialist equipment
  • bright and textured panels for children with visual impairments
  • seating for carers and supervising adults

These spaces support inclusive play so children of all abilities can play together.

Why play spaces matter

Play spaces support children’s development and benefit the wider community in many ways.

This includes:

  • active play which improves strength, coordination and fitness
