Three-weekly waste collections

Recycling and fly-tipping
Recycling
Recycling is important to protect the environment. Recycling your rubbish saves valuable resources, uses less energy, prevents pollution and saves money.
We can put your waste materials to good use and we have a legal requirement to recycle as much household waste as we reasonably can.
If you put everything in the black bin you are likely to run out of space over 3 weeks and we do not collect extra bags left by the bin. You would need to separate your waste into materials that can be recycled which are collected separately.
Waste in the black bin is the most expensive per tonne to treat and dispose of. By recycling as much of your waste as possible you are saving the council money, which can be used on other services.
There are laws and penalties that apply if we don't recycle properly or enough. Whilst occasionally things do go wrong, the vast majority of recycling collected does end up being recycled. You can help by making sure you check the list of what we can accept and recycle as much as you can.

Fly-tipping
Evidence from other councils which have introduced a 3-weekly black bin collection, and our own experience in the Daventry area, indicates no increase in fly-tipping as a direct result of the change.
Fly-tipping is often a result of the rising cost of waste disposal, meaning rogue traders are more inclined to dispose of their waste illegally.
Fly-tipping is an offence, and we prosecute and fine people who do it. If you see it in your area, please report fly-tipping. Items most commonly fly-tipped are bulky items or commercial waste, neither of which is collected as part of the kerbside collection service.
