Home Composting

Composting is an easy and eco-friendly way to deal with garden waste and some kitchen waste. Organic waste is put into a container or contained area, where it breaks down and turns into compost.

This compost is a product rich in nutrients and beneficial micro-organisms which help to support soil and plant health.

The benefits of composting

Composting is a free and easy way to deal with your garden waste such as leaves and woody materials, as well as some kitchen waste such as fruit and vegetable peelings. The result provides you with free compost for your garden.

Compost heaps are also great for wildlife.

What can be composted

Anything that was once living will compost although some items are best avoided. For best results, use a mixture of ingredients and equal amounts of ‘green’ (such as weeds, vegetable peelings and leafy debris) and ‘brown’ (such as shredded woody prunings and cardboard) items.

Compost bin offer

It is possible to make compost just by piling up garden waste in a heap, although it’s more efficient and space-saving to use a bin. You can build your own from wooden pallets or recycled planks, or buy a purpose-made bin.

West Northants residents can purchase compost bins at a special price online.

Alternatively, you can visit your local garden or DIY store.

Garden waste collection

We offer an optional, chargeable collection service for garden waste.
