Public and environmental organisations

These organisations play an important role in delivering nature recovery and environmental protection and should use the strategy to inform how they meet their legal duty to conserve and enhance biodiversity.

Public bodies are involved in creating policies, managing land, enforcing environmental regulations and investing in projects that benefit nature. They will lead by example, showing communities how to support and protect the environment.

They should use the strategy to inform their policies and decision making, prioritise funding and direct environmental investments.

The strategy’s maps and nature recovery priorities will highlight the key areas where public investment can make the biggest difference, ensuring that projects provide maximum benefits to nature and local communities.

Charitable organisations can use the strategy to guide land management that benefits both people and nature and as evidence for unlocking investment opportunities in nature recovery initiatives.

Biodiversity duty

Public authorities in England, including West Northamptonshire Council, parish councils, statutory undertakers and government bodies, must consider how they can conserve and enhance biodiversity to fulfil their biodiversity duty under the Environment Act 2021.

Public authorities must:

  • consider how they can conserve and enhance biodiversity
  • set policies and objectives based on this consideration
  • take action to deliver those policies and achieve their objectives

To find out more about the biodiversity duty, visit complying with the biodiversity duty on GOV.UK.

If you are a town or parish council, the Northamptonshire County Association of Local Councils (NCALC) may be able to provide advice and support.
