General waste bin or sacks

Your black wheelie bin or sacks are for the disposal of non-recyclable rubbish.

Only one black wheelie bin will be collected per household. No side waste (additional bags or boxes) is allowed.

In Northampton, sacks are collected weekly. Each household is given 2 sacks per week.

What to put in your general waste bin (or sack in Northampton)

You can put in:

  • nappies
  • plastic bags
  • cling film
  • wrappers
  • crisp packets
  • sweet packets
  • broken toys
  • polystyrene
  • duvets
  • pillows
  • non-recyclable rubbish

You can't put in:

  • hot ashes
  • liquids
  • large items - see bulky waste collection
  • heavy materials like car parts, stones or rubble
  • hazardous materials, such as paints, oils and chemicals, which can be taken to HWRCs - see hazardous waste
  • small electrical items and batteries - see small electrical or battery-powered items below

Collection times

We will collect your black wheelie bin every 2 weeks (the alternate week to your recycling blue lidded bin).

In the Daventry area, collection is every 3 weeks.

Sacks are collected weekly in Northampton.

Check your bin collection day.

All black wheelie bins/sacks must be at the kerbside by 6:30am on your collection day. If you are unable to present your bins kerbside due to age or disability, find out how to get help putting your bins out.

Although you may be used to seeing the crews at the same time each week, there is no set time for collections to take place; only the day of the week is set. Please do not report missed collections until the morning after the specified collection day.

Preparing your bin

You must close the bin lid to ensure that no waste escapes prior to collection. Although this is not an offence in itself, it can prevent the bin fitting on the bin lift when being emptied. We will not empty open bins and we will decline any request for a missed collection.

Do not overfill your bin. If your bin is packed too tight, when it is lifted by the lorry it may not empty all the contents, Veolia will not return for part empty bins and will decline any request for a missed collection.
