Support with food costs, clothing, toiletries and household essentials

Community larders and social supermarkets

Food Aid Alliance West Northants (FAAWN) is a network of community larders and social supermarkets. They help people access low-cost food and household essentials.

Community larders and social supermarkets are places where you can regularly buy food, toiletries and household items, such as cleaning products, at a reduced cost. Some also offer clothing.

Using these services can help you:

  • reduce your food bills
  • cut food waste
  • access additional support and advice
  • meet other people in your community

You can find your nearest community larder or social supermarket on the FAAWN website.

Discounted food and reducing food waste

There are several ways to reduce food costs and help prevent food waste.

‘Use by’ dates are about food safety and should not be ignored. ‘Best before’ dates relate to quality, not safety. Food that is close to its best before date is often reduced in price and is still safe to eat.

You can:

  • look for reduced price items in supermarkets
  • freeze suitable food before the use by date
  • batch cook meals to make food last longer

You may find the following organisations helpful:

  • Cooking Good - offers advice and tips to help you develop healthy shopping habits and make your food budget go further
  • Too Good to Go - works with cafés, supermarkets, bakeries and restaurants to sell surplus food at a reduced price
  • Olio - allows you to share or collect free surplus food from local households and businesses
  • Approved Food - sells groceries that are close to or past their best before date. Delivery charges and minimum spends apply. Buying in bulk may offer better value
